About

Turtle Canyon, a thrilling new exhibit opening March 22, 2014, features a diverse collection of more than 14 species spanning three continents. From the largest tortoise species in the world, the Galapagos tortoise, to the smallest tortoise species in the Northern Hemisphere, the Egyptian tortoise, Turtle Canyon showcases turtles of all shapes and sizes and allows guests to view turtles up close and personal from multiple angles and vantage points. The new exhibit includes a turtle corral, which offers guests the unique opportunity to touch a variety of these adorable shelled creatures, including one of North America’s largest tortoise species, the Gopher tortoise. Bravo – a more than 600-pound, 84-year-old Galapagos tortoise and the largest turtle in the Midwest – is the star of Turtle Canyon. Hatched April 19, 1929 on the Ecuadorian island of Santa Cruz, Bravo arrived at the United States as part of the last group of tortoises exported from the Galapagos Islands. Not only is he big, Bravo is athletic and known for climbing rocks to reach food. Joining Bravo: a 118-pound alligator snapping turtle named Thunder and Newport Aquarium mainstay Denver, the mischievous 200-pound loggerhead sea turtle with a three-foot-long shell.

Mighty Mike is back by popular demand and he’s made his home in the Gator Alley Exhibit. At 14-feet and 800-pounds, he’s the biggest, baddest Gator outside Florida.

Newport Aquarium showcases thousands of aquatic creatures from around the world in a million gallons of water. Newport Aquarium was named the No. 1 aquarium in the 2012 Readers Choice Travel Awards from 10Best.com. A state-of-the art facility, the Newport Aquarium brings to the banks of the Ohio River some of the world's most advanced, creative technology -- not to mention amazing animals -- all designed to take you around the globe, visiting each continent, every ocean and hundreds of waterways in between. While exploring guests have the opportunity to pet a shark, play in the interactive frog bog and even pet a penguin during the Penguin Encounter. The newest, most exciting addition is the Shark Ray Bay where visitors can learn about the four, extremely rare Shark Rays on display Sweet Pea, Scooter, Sunshine and Spike. Dive shows in the Surrounded By Sharks exhibit is excitement for the whole family as divers talk from underwater and even answer questions.

Named one of the Best Aquariums in the U.S. by Travel Channel!
